For those who are planning their first safari in Africa, it is slightly difficult to imagine what to expect.

In fact, there is no typical safari day in Africa, as each day brings in new experiences, magic and excitement, though notionally they sound the same. A very broad generalization might be as follows.

A day’s experiences depend on many factors like the activities you choose, the location, the season, the habitat, the time of the day …

Day’s activities are usually discussed over dinner the previous evening. You will be given a wake up call by the guide accompanying you at 5 am. You might feel it is dreadfully early, but if you wish to see the game before they retreat to shade due to heat, starting your day as early as that is indispensable.

After a quick tea and toast, (sometimes, you may prefer to skip breakfast to a brunch in the bush) on your game drive or walking safari accompanied by your guide. Game drives usually last 4 hrs and walking safaris for 2 hrs. The time depends on what you encounter on your way. Halfway through you may wish to stop at a scenic place to have a cup of tea by the bush (these places are usually established campsites with water and rest room facilities).

As the sun gets hot, it gets very difficult to spot the game. So you get back to the camp for lunch. Afternoon may be spent napping, or reading books or cooling off with some drinks.

Activities start again at around 3:30 pm after tea and snack. You will have yet another opportunity to watch the game. Then is the time for one of the popular safari activities, “the sun downer”. The game drives pause and people climb out of the vehicles to watch the spectacular African sunset. The game drive continues for some more time in the setting darkness and then its time to leave for the camp as per the rules of the National park.

The day’s game sightings, experiences are shared with other guest’s over dinner most probably followed by a cultural activity like the Maasai dance, if organized by the hotel or campsite management.

Then it is time to bed at an early hour as you will have to be up at 5:00am following morning to start another exciting day in Africa.
