zanzibar basic facts

Zanzibar, a part of the United Republic of Tanzania, is a series of many islands, the main ones being Unguja and Pemba. The more populated of the two main islands, Unguja, is better known as Zanzibar Island and is home to Stone Town, a historic, bustling city of narrow alleyways and stone coral buildings. In addition to the two main islands, there are many other islands and islets in the Zanzibar archipelago.

Pemba, located about 50 Kms north of Unguja, is far less populated. Pemba is covered in steep hills full of palms, clove and rubber trees, rice paddies and the Ngezi Forest in the north. There are many pure, beautiful beaches in and around the numerous inlets and coves.

Udzungwa national park

This is the most recently gazetted of the national parks. Due to the taboos of traditional beliefs, the mountains have remained untouched for thousands of years. So many endemic species of both mammal and bird have evolved and thrived.

The mountains are swathed in a unique and fascinating rainforest, home to a huge biodiversity with ten species of primate, including the endemic “Sanje Crested’ Mangabey, the Hehe Red Colobus, two new species of bushbaby, and several recently discovered species of birds. Ideal for ornithologists and enthusiasts alike, the trip to Udzungwa involves a walk beneath the canopy of primary rain forest, with the chance to see the abundant endemics, climbing steadily up the mountain, across cascading streams to emerge at the top of Sanje Waterfalls to breathtaking views over the rift valley.

Udzungwa is an easy day tri from Mikumi National Park and guided walks can be taken from camps.

Emigrate to mars

Why?

Earth’s fine place to live but for how long? Population, pollution, global warming, drastic weather changes, frequent natural disasters…how many more reasons do we need?

So when?

Not many years from now. Although no official deadline for achieving human travel to Mars has been set, a mission to our closest neighbor—136 million to 150 million miles (220 million to 240 million kilometers) from Earth—is imminent, according to some scientists. While many scientists say a mission to Mars is technologically possible today, there are many questions of whether it is practical, economic, or safe to undertake such a mission.

Eid-al-fitr

Eid al-Fitr (in Kiswahili also called ‘Idi’ or ‘Sikuku,’ which means ‘celebration’) is the Muslim holiday that signifies the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is without a doubt the central holiday of Islam, and a major event throughout Tanzania, but especially observed on the Swahili Coast and the Zanzibar Archipelago. Throughout Ramadan, Muslim men and women fast from sunrise to sunset, only taking meagre food and drink after dark. The dates for Eid al-Fitr vary according to the sighting of the new moon, but as soon as it is observed the fasting ends and four days of feasting and festivities begin.
