Planning For A Successful Trip

Your trip to East Africa should be enjoyable, memorable and free from trouble. Nevertheless, traveling in any developing country carries some risks, which is why careful planning will pay dividends. Almost half our emergency evacuations involve visitors, and large proportions are due to road accidents.

Flying Doctor

The flying doctors’ Service is operated by AMREF, Africa’s largest indigenous health charity. Airborne ambulances are on call throughout Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda as well as neighboring countries. Traveler Members are entitled to free aero medical evacuation.

About Flying Doctor

The Flying Doctors’ Service has been in operation for nearly 50 years. It owns four Cessna aircraft and links some 900 airstrips in East Africa. Helicopters are chartered when necessary. The Flying Doctors are on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year, by phone and by radio. They carry out some 600 evacuations each year. Treatment can begin the moment the trauma teams arrive, as they carry modern equipment and the aircraft are equipped as intensive care units. Patients are stabilized and delivered to the appropriate hospital in Nairobi.

In an Emergency

The flying doctors’ service stays in touch with the communities it serves through a network of over 100 radio stations. Wherever you are in East Africa, you can radio in and an airborne trauma team will be dispatched immediately. The Flying Doctors are known by all regional hospitals and clinics, and full information on how to contact them in an emergency is provided with your travel membership pack.

All the aircraft are staffed by specialist trauma nurses and doctors, who are experienced in dealing with life-threatening situations, where time is short and immediate action is essential.
